WHO is dan cody?
Dan Cody was an enormously wealthy old man, a millionaire many times over, who earned his fortune mining silver. Gatsby met him when he was a seventeen year old boy - a runway with no money or no prospect. When he saw Dan Cody's yacht drop anchor he knew that his was an opportunity to leave his old life behind him.
DAN CODY's significance to Gatsby

After Gatsby warned Cody about the storm, Cody found him to be an ambitious young man. He hired him and let Gatsby be an assistant on his yacht. Here, Gatsby learned from the 5 years he was on the yacht with Cody, the life of the rich and famous. Gatsby learned how to dress, how to talk, and how to walk. He was now part of the glamour lifestyle. He obtained a certain amount of polish and sophistication about him. Cody was the one that greatly influenced Gatsby and it was because of him James Gatz left behind his original identity, and created Jay Gatsby.
